PUCO reminds you to click, call or tap before you dig
COLUMBUS, OHIO (July 31, 2014) – The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) reminds you to click, call or tap before you dig. Not only will you know that you are safe to dig, you will prevent potential outages, costly repairs and serious or even fatal injuries.
The Ohio Utility Protection Service (OUPS) is the communication link between Ohio individuals planning to dig and utility companies. OUPS now has multiple ways to request a check for underground utility lines or structures. Ohio law requires that anyone, homeowner or contractor, planning a digging project click, call or tap at least 48 hours and up to 10 days (not including weekends or legal holidays) before digging.
Call 8-1-1: Homeowners and contractors can still call 8-1-1 or 1-800-362-2764 before any digging project. Before calling, have your project plans, address, digging location and digging start date ready to tell the representative. After your call, mark your digging location with white flags or white paint and then wait 48 hours for any utilities to mark your location for underground lines or structures.
Click http://www.oups.org/edig: The OUPS now has an e-dig filing system. This system is to be used for non-emergency, one address digging projects that fall within the 48 hours to 10 day timeframe. After inputting your digging project information, you will receive an email confirmation and ticket number. The ticket number proves that you called.
Tap http://www.oups.org/idig: For excavators, contractors and utility facility owners only. This app allows professionals to enter their notification requests online and provides ticket notifications immediately. As state law dictates, users are still required to enter requests at least 48 hours and up to 10 days before their project start.
Together with the Oil & Gas Producers Underground Protection Service (OGPUPS) and OUPS, the PUCO says click, call or tap BEFORE you dig.
