PUCO approves upgrades of three rail crossings across Ohio

COLUMBUS, OHIO (April 24, 2013) – The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) today approved construction authorization at three highway-rail grade crossings in Athens, Jefferson and Wood counties. The upgrades will be made as follows:

  • Norfolk Southern Railway Company (NS) will install flashing lights and warning gates at the State Route 13 (513-492B) grade crossing in the village of Chauncey, Athens County. Funding for this upgrade will be shared among the PUCO, the railroad and the Ohio Rail Development Commission. NS will be responsible for completing construction by April 24, 2014.
  • Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Company will add a flasher assembly on the right hand side of the Third Street (473-005P) grade crossing in the village of Tiltonsville, Jefferson County.
  • CSX Transportation will install mast-mounted flashing lights and roadway gates at the Roundhead Road/Township Road 37 (155-765E) grade crossing in Milton Township, Wood County. The railroad will be responsible for completing construction of the upgrade by January 24, 2014. Funding for the project will be provided by federal funds.

To increase public safety during the construction of the projects, the PUCO will assist the local governments with the cost of improvements such as rumble strips, illumination, improved signage or other safety enhancements at the project locations. Funding for the improvements will come from the State Grade Crossing Safety Fund and will not exceed $5,000.

The PUCO is responsible for evaluating Ohio’s public grade crossings to determine the need for installing active warning devices. Over the past decade, the annual number of train-motor vehicle crashes in Ohio has decreased significantly, from 123 in 2001 to 64 in 2011.

The Ohio Rail Hotline, at (866) 814-RAIL (7245), provides Ohioans with a toll-free resource for all railroad crossing questions. For more information regarding these crossings, access the Ohio railroad information system website at http://gradecrossings.puco.ohio.gov/.
