PUCO approves upgrade of fourteen rail crossings in Canton

COLUMBUS, OHIO (Aug. 15, 2012) – The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) today approved construction authorization from the Ohio Rail Development Commission directing Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway (W&LE) to install safety upgrades, including flashing lights and gates at fourteen highway-rail grade crossings in Canton.

Upgrades will be made to the following crossings:

12th Street NE (474-399K)

5th Street NE (474-386J)

2nd Street NE (474-383N)

6th Street NE (474-387R)

2nd Street SE (474-381A)

7th Street NE (474-388X)

3rd Street NE (474-384V)

8th Street NE (474-390Y)

3rd Street SE (474-380T)

Cleveland Avenue SE (474-356S)

4th Street NE (474-385C)

Madison Street SE (474-379Y)

4th Street SE (474-378S)

Tuscarawas Street (474-382G)

The railroad is directed to complete construction of the upgrades by Feb. 17, 2014.  Funding for these upgrades will be provided by federal funds.

To increase public safety during the construction of the project, the PUCO will assist the local government with the cost of improvements such as rumble strips, illumination, improved signage, or other safety enhancements at the project location. Funding for the improvements will come from the State Grade Crossing Safety Fund, and will not exceed $5,000.

The PUCO is responsible for evaluating Ohio’s public grade crossings to determine the need for installing active warning devices. Over the past decade, the annual number of train-motor vehicle crashes in Ohio has decreased significantly, from 123 in 2001 to 64 in 2011.
