Commissioner Asim Z. Haque was appointed to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio by Governor John R. Kasich in 2013, and currently serves as vice-chairman.
Commissioner Haque, an attorney, began his professional career at a large general practice firm in Columbus where he represented a broad spectrum of clients in energy and utility matters. He went on to serve as internal legal counsel for a global auto manufacturer, a role he held immediately prior to his appointment to the Commission.
Commissioner Haque has represented Ohio’s interests in energy and utility matters within the state, nationally and internationally. He has testified before members of the Ohio General Assembly, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and has educated regulators abroad through formal partnerships with the U.S. Agency for International Development.
He serves on the board of directors of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC). At NARUC, he serves as vice-chair of both the NARUC Task Force on Environmental Regulation and Generation, as well as the Clean Coal and Carbon Management Subcommittee. He also serves on NARUC’s Gas Committee and Critical Infrastructure Committee. He is the president of the Mid-Atlantic Conference of Regulatory Utilities Commissioners (MACRUC) for the 2015-2016 term, and serves on the MACRUC board of directors. In addition, Commissioner Haque was elected to serve on the Member Representative Committee of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) where he represents state government interests in maintaining reliability of the electric grid.
He also serves on the board of directors of MACRUC, and is president of MACRUC for the 2015-2016 term. In addition, Commissioner Haque was elected to serve on the Member Representative Committee of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), where he represents state government interests in maintaining reliability of the electric grid.
Passionate about public service, Commissioner Haque is heavily involved in his local community. He is the immediate past president of the board of directors of the non-profit organization Community Research Partners. He is also the immediate past president of The Columbus Academy Alumni Board, and has served on the board of trustees of The Columbus Academy. Additionally, he is a graduate of the FBI Citizens Academy, and was a long-time mentor in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters school-based mentor program.
Commissioner Haque is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University where he received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and political science, graduating cum laude with department honors. He received his juris doctorate from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, and received the Outstanding Recent Alumnus Award from Moritz in 2015.
Commissioner Haque resides in Columbus with his wife, Dr. Huma Ansari Haque, and their son, Laith.
