PUCO approves 9-1-1 plan for Monroe County

COLUMBUS, OHIO (May 21, 2009) – The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) today approved a plan for the implementation of 9-1-1 service in Monroe County. The 9-1-1 system will become operational on June 1, 2009.

On April 6, 2009, AT&T Ohio, the Monroe County coordinating telephone company, filed the final plan for the implementation of 9-1-1 service in Monroe County. Under the 9-1-1 plan, Verizon, AT&T Ohio and Windstream will provide the county with 9-1-1 emergency telephone service.

AT&T will charge their Monroe County subscribers a monthly rate of 12 cents per access line for the service. Verizon will charge 24 cents and Windstream will charge 25 cents per access line.

Verizon, AT&T Ohio and Windstream are responsible for notifying their Monroe County subscribers of the availability and use of 9-1-1 service.

The PUCO is responsible for monitoring the development and implementation of 9-1-1 systems within individual counties in Ohio. Currently, 87 Ohio counties have enhanced 9-1-1 emergency service, leaving one Ohio county without the emergency service.
